When a web development company is worth hiring
A rebuild takes about nine weeks and is the wrong answer more often than agencies admit. If your current site converts and someone can change it this week, the money is better spent getting traffic to it.
It is the right answer in four specific cases: the platform limits what a page can be, no change can ship without hiring someone, the site is slow for reasons a rebuild is the only fix for, or it sits on a builder whose monthly fee you want to stop paying. We will tell you which applies on the first call.
A new site earns its cost only once people arrive at it, which is SEO and Google Ads, and when what they submit reaches your team with its source attached, which is CRM integration. If what you need is an application rather than a website, that is software development.
The build starts with a content pass
The first week is a content pass over Google Meet, working through what each page needs to say with someone who knows the business. It is the stage that decides whether the finished site reads as specific or generic.
The checkable details come out of that conversation: what you sell most of, the questions you are asked every week, the towns you actually cover, and the work you would rather not take. None of it can be inferred from a brief.
How this web development company runs a build, in order
Four stages, six to ten weeks, fixed price agreed before the first stage starts.
The content pass
Week one · a working sessionA working session over Google Meet, going through what each page needs to say with someone who knows the business. Two hours of that replaces about three weeks of emailing drafts, and it is where the specific details come from.
It is also where we establish what you sell most of, which is frequently not what the old site led with.
Built static
The build · Astro, on AWSPages are generated once at build time and served as plain files. There is no database queried on each visit and no plugin stack to patch, which is why these sites load quickly and stay up.
It is the same stack this site runs on, so you can measure this page yourself.
Form, tracking and CRM at launch
Built in, not added laterThe lead form posts to a real destination, the submission is tracked as a conversion, and it reaches your CRM with the page and the ad that produced it attached. On most builds this is deferred and then never done.
Without it you have a website but no data to make decisions from.
The migration
Redirects · schema · the sitemapEvery URL on the old site is mapped to its closest match on the new one and given a permanent redirect. Skipping this loses the rankings the old site earned, usually about two weeks after launch.
Structured data on every page, generated from that page's own content, and a sitemap confirmed in Search Console before the build is signed off.
The scope, written down before you pay
Scope goes in the agreement before any money changes hands. It is written out in full below.
In the build
- Content pass, then writing and revisions
- Up to about twelve pages on the base build
- Mobile-first, and tested on real phones
- Lead form, tracking and CRM connection
- Redirect map from every old URL
- A CMS and admin login where your team needs one
After launch
- Hosting at cost, usually a few dollars a month
- Changes billed hourly, or folded into a retainer
- No page-builder license and no plugin renewals
- You can move it to another firm at any time
- We hand over the accounts at launch, not on request
Not included
- A monthly fee for keeping your own website online
- Stock photography presented as your premises or staff
- A page builder that locks the design to our account
- Ecommerce beyond a handful of products. We will point you at Shopify
Not sure whether you need a rebuild or a tune-up? We will tell you which, for free.
Three things you can check yourself
- Measure this page
- Run this page through PageSpeed Insights. It is built the way we build client sites.
- Read the redirect plan
- Ask to see it before launch. It is a spreadsheet of every old URL and its destination.
- Ask who holds the accounts
- Domain, hosting and analytics are registered in your name at the start.
Web development company questions we get asked
What does a web development company charge for a site?
Fixed price for a build of about a dozen pages, quoted before we start and paid in two instalments. Larger sites cost more. The number is agreed before you commit rather than revised at week six, and starting figures are on the pricing page.
How long does it take?
Six to ten weeks. The variable is rarely the build; it is how quickly content decisions are made on your side. Running the content pass as one working session in week one keeps it at the shorter end.
Do I own the website?
Yes. The code is in your repository, the domain and hosting are in your name, and there is no license fee. Moving to another firm requires no export, because it is already yours.
Why not WordPress?
Most small sites do not need a database and a plugin stack to serve fifteen pages, and that stack is what breaks, slows down and gets compromised. If your team needs to publish regularly we build a CMS with an admin area for it. If you specifically need WordPress, we will build it properly.
Can I edit it myself?
Yes, and you choose how much. The base build gives you text and images through a simple editor. If you need more than that we build you a proper CMS: an admin area behind a login, where your team writes and publishes pages, uploads images and manages content without touching code. Tell us who will be editing and how often, and we will size it to that rather than sell you an admin nobody opens.
Will I lose my Google rankings?
Not if the migration is done properly. Every old URL gets a permanent redirect to its closest match, the structured data carries over, and we confirm the new sitemap in Search Console. Rankings typically fluctuate for a week or two and then settle. Sites that lose rankings in a rebuild usually had no redirect map.
What about hosting?
It runs on AWS at a few dollars a month, billed to your account rather than ours. We do not resell hosting.
What is the difference between a web development company and a web design agency?
Design decides how it looks; development decides whether it works. Many firms sell one and subcontract the other, which is how a well-designed site arrives with a form that posts nowhere and a page that takes six seconds on a phone. We do both in house.
Should I hire a web development company or use a page builder?
If the site is five pages, rarely changes and feeds nothing else, a builder is cheaper and we will say so. Hire a development company when the site has to do something: take bookings, price a job, connect to your CRM, carry hundreds of pages, or load fast enough to run paid traffic at. The indicator is how often you hit the limits of the builder.
Do you do ecommerce?
A handful of products, yes. A full catalogue with inventory, tax and returns, no: Shopify does that better than a custom build would. We are happy to do the design and the marketing around a Shopify store.
